Youth, Chaos, Projects

Diabolical Dave as a 3-year old tiger...then as a pouting 4-year old. I think I really need to do something with these pics, just haven't decided what yet. At least I have them scanned. That's a start.

Too many projects cooking. I should have a test printing of "This Is YOU!" waiting for me when I get back from NYC. My hopes aren't up too high. I think I should've opted for color printing even though the book is black and white. The paper stock for the color books is a lot nicer. Whatever. I love doing crazy test printings. I'd rather waste money on that than some other forms of entertainment.

Characters

Nothing like getting stuff ready to go to NYC while rocking out to the Dictators. (I may have to stop by Manitoba's for happy hour.) I doubt I run into any cute characters in NYC, but I'm sure they'll be great characters. They always are.

My Power of Invisibility

Tonight I went out for 1/2 price sushi, which still somehow ends up being expensive. I went alone and took my sketchbook with me. My order was simple enough... an order of octopus, an order of eel, a red dragon roll, a bottle of Sapporo and the complimentary bowl of miso soup. The meal went fine and quickly. The bus boy took away the empty soup bowl and platter that had contained the red dragon roll as I finished up the eel. Once done, I proceeded to start doodling in my sketchbook, waiting for the bill. Occasionally I'd look up to catch the waiter's eye...or the eye of any of the waitstaff. None of them took notice of me. Other tables got service, but I continually got passed by. I figured at the very least they'd want to sell me another beer. And so I sat there, enjoying my invisibility for about 20 or 30 minutes. I'm sure I could have walked out the door many times without anyone noticing. Finally, a waitress asked me if I wanted the complimentary ice cream, which I declined. And she brought me the check.

I first realized my powers of invisibility when I was in 5th grade. Columbus Day was coming up and we were discussing Christopher Columbus. Ms. Johns asked if anyone knew the names of his ships. An easy one for sure...the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. I quickly raised my hand. Again, she asked if anyone knew the names of the ships as she scanned the class of about 23. I was sitting in the middle of the room, arm raised and now waiving it. She STILL doesn't see me. "None of you know the answer? That's a disgrace." I was bewildered. How could she possibly NOT see me?

Over the years, similar things have happened countless times. I can be with a group of people discussing trivia or something, all of them trying to recall a certain fact. I can be standing right there, say the answer out loud multiple times and it's like I'm not even there. It's not a power I can control; I can't turn it on and off, but I can use and have used it to my advantage on several occasions.

Sticker Sick

I'm compiling stuff for my trip to NYC...stuff to show around and pimp Savage Monsters, Goonhead Patrol, and a guy named Dave Savage. And I'm stumbling across all these files of stickers that I never produced and stuff that ought to be produced as stickers. So maybe besides my trip to NYC and my Iron Maiden sneakers, (on sale, no less. And size 11 if you feel compelled to get me another pair.) maybe I'll order some stickers for my upcoming birthday.

Memorial Day Weekend...Already Gone...

I finished off the weekend seeing Gary Panter and Devin Flynn perform at Family Books.

And I also saw some other stuff...

I realized Sam Raimi works in the same office complex as I do.

From the Past...

A few weeks ago, a fellow classmate from Portfolio Center contacted me. At one point, I doodled this fish, she liked it, and I gave it to her. I have absolutely no recollection of this happening. I do recognize the the work as mine, and the kind of work I would've done while sitting at the front desk doodling with pens and hi-liters. She gave it a background, framed it and has been displaying it ever since. Really sort of blew my mind.

Found

I submitted this to Found Magazine at least 6 months ago (I was still living in Cleveland at the time) and it finally made Find of the Day. I haven't looked at the site in awhile, but was alerted by Google Alerts when someone posted it at IDM Forums. The power of the internet never ceases to amaze me.

Metal Man!!!

I keep forgetting that I did this. Not my favorite or strongest work, but I'm glad I was part of the Metal Man Project.
