Savage Skull, Savage Brain, Savage Thoughts, Savage Scribbles

In avoidance of doing things that I should be doing (like cleaning my apartment), I compiled a book of my cartoons (many of them appeared in the comix zines I've done over the years), uploaded it to Lulu and ordered a sample copy. Not too bad for a day's work. And of course, as soon as I complete the order, I remember some other cartoons that should've been included. I'll add them before I make the book available to the public. The test print I ordered clocks in at 292 pages, black and white. It'll probably retail for around $15.

The Arts and Innards of Russell U. Richards

I've been a fan of Russell Richards for the past 5 years or so. I've wanted to buy some of his art for awhile now, but it's a bit too pricey for my budget. He recently published a book through an on-demand service. Although more expensive than a book like it should be, it was affordable. And worth it. Lot of insight into his work and life.

Check out his work.

And buy his book.

Let The Black Light Shine

I just finished compiling art for a black light test print. I'm going through an on-demand print place that adds some sort of light sensitive additive to ink jet inks. My first test came out pretty well, but some of the colors weren't as vibrant as I'd like. This time around, I'm leaving the art in RGB mode and using more vibrant colors. Now all I have to do is place the order and await the results...

OH NO!

This is the 500th post on Goonhead Patrol! It coincides pretty well with my layoff, and rethinking what I want to do with my life. It may just be time for me to really make a big push and make Savage Monsters the company that I've always wanted it to be. Just have to figure out how to make it happen. Maybe take on a partner. Or an employee to take care of business strategy, marketing and all the crap that I'm bad at.

Now Accepting and Submitting Job Applications

Just as I was reviving my search for an intern, I got laid off. So now I'll have more time to spend on Savage Monsters. And I'll be submitting some job applications of my own instead of taking intern applications.

Apartamento Exotico

You know you've made a good move when the pizza delivery guy says that the new apartment is much nicer than the old one. And it's been a busy day at the new Secret Lair. The cable guy and gas guy both came. I ended up getting an Airport Extreme for my internet connection, which so far, I love. The gas guy found a crack in my heater, so it needs to be fixed before it can be turned on. The landlord's maintenance guy came over to look at it. He saw all my stuff and asked if I'm an artist. Then he seemed surprised that I am an artist. A short discussion of vintage movie posters followed. What a day. I can't wait until I'm finally done moving.

Thanksgiving

I spent this Thanksgiving at the home of a friend and coworker's mother. When I asked if I could bring anything, she told me to bring some of my art. I took a couple test prints of some of the books I'm working on and a pile of the comic zines I've done in the past. All of which seemed to go over well. I'm not sure what to be more thankful for, my friends, my creativity or that I'm able to make a decent living in a creative field. I'm thankful for all of them.

Lack

Lack of blog posts, lack of work, lack of fun. I've been moving. I have one month to move all my stuff 3 blocks. Retrieving all the stuff from my storage unit was the easy part. Going through all the books and art I've been without for the past year has been great. And buying stuff like a bed and custom made bookshelves has been fun, although expensive.

Moving out of my current apartment on the other hand, is a disaster. Last night I planned to pack a bunch of stuff up. After looking at all the stuff I have in the apartment, I felt kind of sick and had to leave. Luckily, I still have a little over 3 weeks to get it all moved. And it seems like I'm moving a backpack full of stuff at a time. But even a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.

Black Light

I've revamped my art in case I ever make more black light posters of this image. Too many things I want to do.

Right now I want to go to sleep.

Motorhead

MTV is putting a lot of videos from the archive up. So far I haven't been able to find a lot of the stuff that I'd like to see...besides Motorhead.

My Stuff Is Out There...

Being the type of guy who googles himself on a semi-regular basis, it's always nice to find my stuff, or stuff about me out there...

A Savage Monster fan in Mexico 3 images have been swiped, I'm guessing from my IllustrationMundo interview a few years ago.

Art-O-Matic 2004 I won the Flop Award. I displayed a bunch of my paper bag puppets at the show.

Drawing

Sometimes I feel compelled to draw strange things. Like vaginas on wheels.

Expired

The 3rd Savage Monsters Secret Lair is now in the possession of new owners, and has been for the past month.

I think the current lair will soon be dismantled and moved to a bigger space. Although I've called the current location the Savage Monsters Secret Lair, it's never really felt like it. And only a few people have had the privilege (or displeasure) to see it.

If you think you know of a good space for the next Savage Monsters Secret Lair in the West LA/Santa Monica area, let me know. I'm all ears.

Milestones

I just hit my unceremonious 3 year anniversary with American Greetings yesterday. And coincidentally, I also hit 10,000 unique viewers at Goonhead Patrol on the same day.

So I'm taking the evening off and trying not to think of all the half-baked projects I have in the oven. I'll eventually get some of them done...

My Tattoo Idea

I've had the idea to get a connect the dots tattoo for more than a few years. It looks like someone else has gotten the same idea...and gone through with it. I was thinking more of a battleship across the back than a giraffe on the calf, though.

Stickers

Sometimes I look for my stuff out in the world. These stickers were licensed years ago, but were never produced, at least to my knowledge. And yet the links are still up.

HIgh School

One of my friends from high school posted a bunch of her photos online. And I happened to be in a couple of them. Back in the days when my Cure shirt was in heavy rotation, along with my Dead Milkmen, Sid & Nancy, Siouxsie and Slime Balls shirts.
