Skulls!

From the Past

For some odd reason, I'm obsessed with checking my high school reunion web site. I think it must be a morbid curiosity about what my peers from yesteryear are up to. I was surprised to see what's become of one of my high school friends...

After high school my parent gave me everything, like a business and house. Well, I blew it by getting high on crack and robbing a bank in Kansas. I got caught and went to Federal prison for about 5 years. When I got out of prison, I change a few things (switching to meth) and entered a life of drugs, burglary, theft, and most recently - shooting at the police. The last event (April 2007) was a misunderstanding in Lee's Summit. I did not shoot anyone, but they thought I was trying to shoot them? My gun went off accidentally six times. The real bitch of it, is the State of Missouri is charging me with assault on a law enforcement officer, while the Feds (ATF) are going to charge me with a felon in possession of a firearm? Oh...I also have a few outstanding Burglary warrants (another misunderstanding) to take care of as well.
Long story short, I will probably miss the reunion...unless you can help me with bail? I am good for it...trust me, I 've learned my lesson. Please write me or put money on my book (prison account) so I can buy shampoo and cigarettes. Take care and go Patriots!

Sadly, it's not a joke. It's sort of funny and sad all at once. I was home from college one weekend and my mom had an article about a bank robbery gone awry and asked, "Isn't that one of your friends?" I googled my friends name after I read his post, and several news stories about the more recent incident popped up. I think it shocks me more than anything else. And, makes me think my life and problems really aren't so bad.

Savagemonsters.mobi is UP and RUNNING!

The images are tiny, but I've got 30-some images up on savagemonsters.mobi now. Hopefully I'll figure our some more of the functionality over the weekend. If you've got internet on one of your mobile devices, give it a test run and let me know what you think...

New Savage Monsters Site Coming Soon!

As always, I've got too many things going on. After watching my niece and nephew navigate Savage Monsters, I saw a bunch of stuff that I'd like to revamp, redo or redesign. And, I got the itch to expand Savage Monsters to mobile devices. Hopefully I'll get
savagemonsters.mobi up and running soon.

Join The Goonhead Patrol!

One day soon, you'll be able to become a card carrying member of the Goonhead Patrol. Although I'm not sure anyone actually wants to BE a member.

The Wreck That I Call Home

Still without cable and internet. Nothing on the walls. Strange rules like "TVs and stereos may only be played between 8 am and 8 pm." How can this possibly be my home?

Stirring Up the Clutter

Sifting through all my crap, I found a few things...

Me (on the far right) in front of CBGB shortly after Joey Ramone died.

And a drawing I did for George Lowrey back in the Funny Garbage days. The last time I saw George he asked about that drawing. I had just run across it the week before and then couldn't find it again (after numerous attempts) until recently (when I wasn't looking for it.)

New Office

My new office space seems to be coming together pretty well. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I can't fit it all into my apartment.

iMac Photo Booth

I'm not sure what to think of Photo Booth on my new iMac at work. The normal pictures are creepy enough, the effects just make it all the more creepy.

Among the Giants

I had my first LA celebrity sighting today...Gene Simmons. It must be an omen of good things to come.

New Home

This is the corner of my street...an old restaurant covered in graffiti and surrounded by barbed wire. And the bums sleep in front of the furniture store on Santa Monica Blvd. Surprisingly, they haven't asked me for any money.

It made me happy to see this stop sign on my walk to work. I love culture jamming. (Click on the photo to get a better view...)

Katz's Crew Reunites!

The Katz's Crew has a new blog! Some of my favorite memories of NYC are hanging out with all the misfit cartoonists at Katz's Deli. The group fell apart as people started taking it for granted, not showing up, and moving away. Looks like we'll be sort of reuniting online with the new blog, thanks to Sean Taggart.

Off 2 Cali

Little did I know when I snapped this pic that I, too, would be "off 2 cali." I'm completely stressed out with it all. The movers are coming on Monday, and I'm doing what I can to be ready for them. My goal is to have 40 boxes packed up by the time they arrive. The funny thing is, I've got no idea where I'm gonna put all this stuff once I move. Sometimes I wonder why I have to have so much cool crap. I certainly live on my own planet.

Day of the Dog

Once again, going through old files, I found this poster that I did when I was in college. I thought this was pretty cool when I did it. And it did win some kind of national student designer award or something. Looking at it now, I've got no idea why. Most of the type is pretty illegible. But I bet I thought it looked good on the computer screen when I was zoomed in 300%. And this is also when Adobe Illustrator introduced filters. You can tell that I loved "punk and bloat" and "twirl." And the dog was drawn with the mouse. All of a sudden, I feel really old.

Sad Transformation

One corner of my dining room office. The film canister and hotdogs were dumpster finds. A friend found the ice cream cone on the street.

The kitchen office. I found the Bud Light sign on the street. The art was done by my pal Sean Taggart, who did all the Jerky Boys album covers and promotional material for their movie back in the day.

Head on view of my command center in the dining room office. Protected by Underdog, Popeye and a surfing monkey. And if you're polite, I'll give you some stickers or temporary tattoos.

I've started packing up for the big move to LA. The Savage Monsters Secret Lair is slowly being transformed back into an average house. Just a bit sad. I enjoyed my living space. And originally planned to be here 5-10 years. In the back of my head, I knew it might not happen, so I was careful to not do anything too weird to the house. And, as one of my friends described my house, "it looks like there was a nice family of 4 was living here and you chopped them up and stacked them up like cord wood in the basement. Then you just put all your stuff over their stuff and started living here."

Soon, I'll be out in LA scouting out a new Secret Lair. I've been looking on line a little bit, but it's pretty hard to tell much about the places online. Once I get it all sorted out, I'm sure LA will be good for me.

And, instead of totally focusing on the move and packing, I took on a freelance gig. Normally, I don't do too much freelance, but I'll take on a fun gig when one crosses my path. And I couldn't resist doing an illustration of a litterbug for Las Vegas Weekly. And the art director there is really easy to work with. So I guess I've had a bit of fun in the midst of all the chaos.

Ice Cream Cone Day

I crap out more half baked ideas and artwork than I know what to do with. And more than I can remember. I have definitely got to get some kind of software to get rid of all the multiple copies of files on my computers and get rid of the bulk of older versions of stuff.

CoWorkers....

Jami Attenberg's The Kept Man

Promo video for Jami Attenberg's new book. Watching it just makes me miss Jami, NYC and want to buy her new book. Jami rocks. Check out more of her work. Then check out more.

It's really sort of bittersweet. I love to see Jami doing well, as I do with all my NYC pals. I've come to the realization that my NYC years have been the best in my life. Well, I guess I've known that for the past 7 years, but it's stuff like Jami's successes that remind me of how great my time there was. And how great all my friends there are. And as much as I love NYC, I'm now moving to LA. I'm sure that I enjoy it much more than my years in DC and Cleveland. Whether I encounter the same caliber people that I did in NYC remains to be seen. NYC will always be my home. NYC, and all my pals there, I salute you.
